Professor Oliver Shanley appointed as Independent Chair of the Independent Review of GMMH Services

In November 2022, NHS England (NHSE) placed GMMH into NHS Oversight Framework (OF) segment 4 and enrolling the Trust into the Recovery Support Programme. At the same time, NHSE advised GMMH that they planned to commission an independent review into the Trust’s services.

This week, NHS England has announced the appointment of Professor Oliver Shanley OBE as Independent Chair of the Independent Review. The stated intention of the Review is to bring some clarity and reassurance to patients, their families, and staff, as well as the broader public, in respect of the ongoing safety of services delivered by the Trust. Further can be found on the NHS England website here.

Following his appointment, Professor Shanley will develop Terms of Reference for the Independent Review in collaboration with patients, service users, families and NHS England North West’s regional team.

NHS England have confirmed that the Independent Review will focus predominantly on the Edenfield Centre, as well as the Trust’s other medium- and low-secure services, and will include reviews of ward to board escalation and oversight of patient safety and staff culture.

The Review will commence in February 2023 and conclude no later than 30 September 2023.
